class 9 resources

Hey guys,

Homework from Class 9: Use the checklist below to critique / improve your favorite painting from this class:

Concept Art Checklist:

Do I have any elements that I can use to balance my focal point? Do I need them?

Am I using leading lines and directionality to the fullest? Do they suck me into the painting? Do my leading lines pull the viewers eye to an area of importance?

Have I found references for all of the important objects in my painting?

Do I have any complicated materials in my painting? Do I have references for them, and do I understand how they react to light?

Have I chosen a palette that works with my narrative intentions?

Have I implemented a perspective grid?

Have I done a mini-brainstorm to decide what all of my elements will be and how they work / what I want them to look like?

Do I know how my character feels while they explore the environment?

Are there any metrics that I need to be aware of?

Is there any gameplay that I need to be aware of?

Have I implemented repetition where it makes sense? ( buildings etc)

Have I removed repetition where it doesn’t makes sense?

Have I varied my line thickness to make my image more visually pleasing?

Have I used perspective to make sure that all of my elements have the proper scale?

Have i quickly roughed out the composition and lighting intentions before adding details?

Have I planned the placement of my light source so that it creates the most interesting shapes for my elements?

Have I placed contrasting values in spots that draw the eye to my focal point?

Have I placed discordant shapes in spots that draw my eye to my focal point?

Have I placed discordant Colors in spots that will draw my eye to my focal point?

Do the Colors that I chose for my focal points enhance my narrative?

Week 7 - Future refineries

Leaned hard into the science fiction angle, but I tried to tell a specific story with each piece.

Far future. Humans no longer need to work and create robots to do the manual labor. The past factories are on the surface level while the white, futuristic elevators plunge "units" below the surface to the newer factories. This was the last piece I made so I tried to go with a different palette, lighting source, mood, etc.

Two guys inspecting/performing maintenance on the equivalent of a pump jack of today. I allude to the factory below with the enormous sphere in the background.

In the same world as the piece above. I thought of this as an illegal chemical dump, where everything is spewed into a make-shift, awful lake.
